The Causes of Blushing -

Blushing can begin at an early age by experiencing a painful event e.g at school being singled out in class for praise or criticism. Or being caught doing something you might have felt ashamed of and having others laugh at you.

The deep feeling of shame and embarrassment creates a negative memory which remains fixed in your unconscious mind .As time passes whenever   you feel that you are being observed by others, this old memory is reactivated, leading to self consciousness and blushing.

Blushing is a visual response to fear and is related to emotions such as anger, guilt, ridicule, shame and embarrassment

Tips and Advice to Stop Blushing

1 - Relax

The more you tense, the more blood flows to your face and this creates a vicious circle. Breathe deeply if you start to get hot and bothered. Relax your shoulders and feel your feet firmly on the ground. Walk tall, this will help to calm you down and take your mind of your blushing.

2 - Retrain your body

Learn creative visualisation, a technique whereby you train your body to stay cool and calm in potentially threatening situations, where you may have blushed in the past. Do this exercise on a regular basis. Find a quiet place, close your eyes and take ten deep breaths. Count downwards from 50 to 0. Imagine yourself in a situation where you feel you might blush. Create a new picture in your mind of yourself calm and confident, dealing with the situation in an effective manner. Reassure yourself that everything is as it should be and that you are remaining cool, calm and relaxed. Do this on a regular basis and blushing will happen less and less and over time will disappear completely.

3 - Don't try to hide it

One way of dealing with blushing is to talk about getting hot and bothered, rather than trying to hide it. Telling a friend or member of your family about the problem can really help dissolve away the tension.

4 - Accept it rather than fight it

The more you are able to relax and say to yourself "at the moment blushing is part of my life but I'm not going to let it affect or spoil my life in a negative way". Gradually you will accept yourself more and the blushing will just disappear.

A final thought -

Part of the embarrassment about blushing is caused by the thought that others will see you as weak or silly. Everyone has had the experience of being embarrassed (its not nice for anyone) But don’t beat your self up. Anyone who thinks less of you for it is most probably not worth knowing anyway!
